Broadcast News Headline Story Assignment

 
Overview & Objectives:
Write a script and create a basic graphic according to the directions below about something going on in MISD or the city of Mesquite.
Materials/Resources:

Materials

  • Adobe Premiere
  • GarageBand - use GarageBand to create your own background music and to use its copyright-free sound effects.
  • Digital Images
  • Headphones

  • This is an individual Assignment, 1 person will recieve credit for work on this assignment.
Vocabulary: add vocabulary words related to the assignment
Directions:

In most news shows, there a basic headline stories which are brief narratives with a basic visual graphic supporting or promoting what is said. In this assignment, you are to write a basic headline story script and create a graphic that supports or promotes what the anchor is saying. Follow the directions below:

  • Look on the Mesquite ISD website, the City of Mesquite website, or Social Media to find something news worthy to report or promote for our upcoming Class Broadcast News Show. It can be an end of season sports report on MISD team records, promoting an upcoming MISD or Mesquite event, announcing of someone winning an award or being recognized, or something that has happened, or is about to happen. Be sure that it is news worthy. You can ask Mr. Coursey if you are not sure if your idea will work.
    • Open MS Word, create a new document.
    • Write your headline story script. Be sure it is a minimum of 3 sentences or more.
    • Save your word document as 1a_lastnamei_HeadlineScript.docx
  • Create a graphic in Photoshop to support or promote the script you have written.
    • Open Photoshop, click Create New, Choose Film & Video, Choose HDTV 1080p, click Create.
    • Add graphics and text to support your story. This graphic is intended to be shown on the screen as your anchor is reading your script.
    • Save your Photoshop .PSD file as 1a_lastnamei_HeadlineGraphic.psd. Export it as a JPG file as well. 1a_lastnamei_HeadlineGraphic.jpg
  • Upload your script, PSD, and JPG graphic files to Google Classroom to turn in for a grade.

Additional Information:

  • Look at the example MSN Live videos shown below for inspiration. The video will show exactly what the intention of your headline news stories is supposed to be.
  • Your script and graphic may actually be used on one of our upcoming Broadcast News Shows.
  • How will you be graded?
    • Newsworthyness of the Story
    • Quality of writing and professionalism of style
    • Quality of Suporting graphic.
    • Ability to Follow directions.

Directions for turning work in:

Save as period_lastnamei_asssignmentname.mp4 (1a_smithj_lighthouse.mp4) in your 1-6wks folder and upload a copy to Google Classroom.

If you are turning in a file as a group project save as (2a_lastnamei1-lastnamei2-lastnamei3_assignmentname.mp4)
