TSA Nationals 2012
The MHS TSA chapter teams had an awesome year with a remarkable conclusion at the National TSA Conference located at The Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN (June 21-25, 2012).
The Technology Student Association (TSA) is the only student organization devoted exclusively to the needs of students interested in technology. Open to students enrolled in or who have completed technology education courses, TSA’s membership includes over 150,000 middle and high school students in 2,000 schools spanning 48 states. TSA is supported by educators, parents and business leaders who believe in the need for a technologically literate society. Members learn through exciting competitive events, leadership opportunities and much more. The diversity of activities makes TSA a positive experience for every student. From engineers to business managers, our alumni credit TSA with a positive influence on their lives.
Imagine an activity so captivating that your students spend hours working on it after school for weeks at a time. That’s what happens when TSA members engage in TSA’s competitions. Only TSA members have the opportunity to compete at exciting state conferences and then at the annual National Conference. Expert judging by technology educators and industry representatives inspires the best from participants. Members are rewarded not only with medals or trophies, but also with memories of the camaraderie and the challenge of a TSA Conference.
The MHS Video Team (Jack Nystrom, Leo Romero, Jessica Gonzalez, Joaquin Hernandez, & Adam Tarver) won the top spot (1st Place) in the nation in the On Demand Video Event. This a the first time, 1st place national TSA trophy win for a MISD TSA chapter team.
We were told at the conference that around 130 different teams from states around the nation and some teams from Germany and Turkey participated in the event. In the end, with hard work, creativity, and preparation, they brought home the trophy.
On Demand Video: Participants (one team of two or more students per chapter, one entry per team) write, shoot, and edit a sixty second video during the conference in this on-site event.
The rules of the On-Demand Video event are that teams are assigned 2 props and a line of dialogue to include in the video at the event meeting. After the event meeting, they have 48 hrs to write, film, edit, and produce a notebook with a script, shot log, and resources sited.
This action packed sci-fi video, The Gaylord Conspiracy, begins as Agent Leon is laying in his hotel room bed and all the sudden his room begins to shake like an earth quake. He looks out the window to investigate and sees something that he is very familiar with, an alien attack. His job as a special government agent is to protect the people of the planet while keeping the alien existence a secret. This video is the only documented truth behind the “alleged” gas explosion occurrence at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville Tennessee on June 19, 2012. The MHS On-Demand Video, The Gaylord Conspiracy, can be viewed on youtube at the following link: http://youtu.be/xBCxYsckhCU <http://youtu.be/xBCxYsckhCU>
Jonathan Alverez scored 10th place in Career Comparisons.
Career Comparisons: Participants (one individual per chapter) thoroughly research various technology-related careers that are associated with one of the following technology areas: Biotechnology, Communications, Energy and Power, Engineering, Manufacturing, Medical Technology, Technology Education Teaching, Transportation, or Construction. After documenting the research, each student submits a cover letter and resume for the selected career and completes a formal job application. Semifinalists participate in an on-site mock interview.
My Trang and Jonathan Alvarez won 9th place in Debating Technological Issues.
Debating Technological Issues: Participants (three teams of two members per state) debate against a team/s from another chapter in order to advance to the semifinals. The teams are instructed on site to take either the pro or con side of a topic that is designated annually.
Mr. Broussard was also recognized the National Conference as Texas TSA Advisor of the Year.
MHS teacher advisors are Ricky Broussard and Donny Coursey.
